Enosburg set to defend girls basketball title

The Enosburg girls’ basketball team has built a program that has consistently made deep playoff runs over the past 11 years.

Since the 2005-06 season, the Hornets have been to at least the semifinals in all by two seasons during that span, including four trips to the finals and three championships (2006, 2008, 2016).

For the recent players, one rival in the postseason with Thetford, who had knocked out the team in the postseason in 2013 in the quarterfinals and the semifinals in 2014 and 2015.

The Hornets finally got over the hump of beating Thetford in the postseason last year when it mattered most, as they came out victorious with a strong win in the finals to win the program’s fourth title in its history, as they finished the year with a 21-3 record and blew through their opponents in the postseason as the No. 1 seed. The closest game they faced was a 14-point win over Richford in the semifinals through their postseason run.

“Thetford has a strong program and to finally get a win after they ended our previous three seasons, and to do it in the championship game was a great accomplishment,” said Enosburg coach Gary Geddes, who is entering his eighth season.

The Hornets lost four key players to graduation with Emilee Bose, who is now playing basketball at Castleton, Phelan Howell, Brooke St. Onge and Cassie Collins.

The team is returning a strong core of players from last year’s team led by senior forward Jenna Bessette, senior guard Lily Ashton, junior forward Bri Severance and junior guard Mariah Archambault.

The experience those players got from last year’s title run will be a big part of the team’s success for the upcoming 2016-17 season.

“With six players returning that got significant playing time last year will help in the transition of losing four starters,” said Geddes. “We just need to see how these returning players and the new varsity players adjust to their new roles. Also, our success will depend on how well we defend throughout the season.”

The Hornets will begin their title defense on Dec. 13 when they host Lamoille.
