The final score might make the game between the Enosburg and BFA-Fairfax girls basketball team look a little lopsided, but the game wasn’t as one-sided as the final might indicate.
Enosburg played stingy defense and Fairfax struggled to get their shots to fall, as the Hornets came away with a 47-33 victory.
“We played pretty good half-court defense out there today,” said Enosburg coach Gary Geddes. “Turnovers were a little tough in the first half, but we cleaned things up pretty good in the second half.”
The Bullets did have some problems with turnovers thanks to the tough defense of the Hornets, but Fairfax also had some tough luck with shots not going in.
Enosburg also held a big margin in the rebounding department.
“We just had a bunch of turnovers, but that’s a credit to Enosburg’s tough, gritty defense,” said Fairfax coach Lee Tourville. “They owned us on the boards and we just weren’t ready right out of the gate.
“We are getting the ball where we want it, but we are just struggling to get it in the basket right now,” he added.
Emily Adams and Sophie Burns continued to lead the charge for Enosburg, as they both knocked in 15 points in the game and had three steals each.
“We don’t see a lot of zone defense, so that was different for us to see today,” said Geddes. “But we did well with it. Emily and Sophie both had good games out there and the bench played well.”
Both teams struggled with turnovers early in the game, as Enosburg held a 10-9 advantage after the first quarter.
Enosburg started to pull away in the second quarter, as it limited Fairfax to just five points while scoring 13 on its way to a 23-14 lead at the half.
“I thought we were playing well defensively, but the passing was rough in the first half,” said Geddes. “There’s no defense when you turn the ball over at the top of the 3-point line, so we talked about that at halftime”
The Hornets continued to slowly pull away as the game progressed through the second half.
Hazel Albee did all she could to keep the Bullets in arms reach scoring 10 points in the second half, but Burns and Adams kept things at a distance.
Jaycee Douglas knocked in six points for Fairfax, while Paige Superneau had five.
It has been a tough couple of games for the Bullets, who faced off against undefeated Lake Region on Tuesday before hosting Enosburg Friday.
They will look to get back in the win column on Monday when they travel to Milton.
“We will get back at it on Monday and try and get some confidence back,” said Tourville. “We see in practice how well our girls can shoot, but we just have to get the confidence back when they games start.”
Enosburg continued to roll for its second win in a row, as it improved to 4-1 on the season. They will have a week off before hosting North Country for their regular season finale next Friday.
The Falcons won the first meeting between the two teams this season 51-43 on February 22 at North Country.
“I told the girls we hold our own destiny in our hands when we play North Country,” said Geddes. “If we want to stay at home in the playoffs, we have to take care of business next week.”
